These are just a few of the things I worked on when I was a guest props artisan at Illinois Wesleyan University.  The play was Scrooge! The Musical and the designer was Curtis Trout, the Director of the School of Theatre Arts.

I built and painted this puppet theatre.

The picture on the right depicts how the puppets were used by the actor.  Judy has a bat attached to her right hand that she pounded Punch with.  Part of the time the actor was hidden, then he came into view with the puppets to react to Scrooge's entrance.

I molded the Punch and Judy heads after researching them on the internet.

In addition to the theater I also molded the head for Punch and Judy.  After the head was done, one of the students made a plaster mold and from that made two heads with latex.  (Curt wanted his student, Dan, to practice mold making).   After the heads were dry I painted them, one as Judy and the other Punch.   Then I found scraps of fabric and designed and sewed their hats and clothes.  Finally, they got felt hands and Judy got a stick to hit Punch with.

I designed and sewed their clothing and hats.

According to the script, the actors need a turkey the size of Tiny Tim, so in a collaboration, Curt and I created this turkey.  I carved the body, thighs and wings.  Curt made one leg and trimmed the thighs a little and I made the other leg to match the one he made.  After I hooked the thighs on with dowels I slipped the whole thing into a pair of panty hose.  The panty hose holds it together.  Curt painted the entire outside with latex then painted it after the latex was dry.  Silvi, a student and I then finished it off with feathers.  The girl is the guest scenic artist.

I upholstered this sofa.

I painted the lettering on Tiny Tim's cross.  Silvi and Dan and several other students collaborated in the making of the cross.

I also decorated this Christmas cake with flowers and ribbons.  I have added the cake on this page not because  it is something special but because I spend a lot of time with hot glue and I think of this cake as a tribute to hot glue!

I had a wonderful time at Illinois Wesleyan University and really enjoyed working in the atmosphere of friendship the professors, staff and students have for each other.

One of the projects I liked most at Illinois Wesleyan University was building and painting the Punch and Judy theater.   There was no color elevation for this theater, so I created it from a line drawing of the plan and designed the final look to fit with the color scheme of the show.  The proscenium is cut from luaun, the sides are luaun and the front is muslin.

For this picture, the theater is sitting on the set in front of three of the six flats depticting houses and the drop of the town is upstage.  The girl in the photo is a student.

Left is a picture of the back of the theatre.  Because the sidewalls needed to be folded flat I constructed all three pieces using half-lap joints.  There is a tumbler on the right side where the side attaches so that when the two sides are folded closed one door lies on top of the other and is flat.

I also upholstered this sofa that was used for Scrooge's Nephew's house.  Curt found this sofa on the side of the road and it was in pretty bad repair.  I made a new leg for the center of the back as well as making new stretcher bars.  It took less than a day and a half to repair and upholster this sofa.  I used the same method I have detailed on my upholstery page on this web site.
